Titus: The Falsehood of Inactivity- SBS Journey

Being challenged today as I wrap up my studies from Titus.  I am starting to understand how the absence of an Overseers touch in the BOC has lead to the possible breakdown in families.

Paul charged Titus with the task of rebuking false teachers, as to restore them to sound doctrine.
(The restorative 💜 of God is so radical to me.)
So that they could instead teach people to be dignified and self controlled, sound in faith and love. To be respectful in behavior, not being slaves to alcohol but instead to love each other, to be respectful in our homes and to model good works to each other.  And to receive God‘s grace, the power found in Christ that carries us from salvation to eternal life.  The vulnerability we  find in this leads to great connection and relationship between each other.  In this place is where we can find gentle space to bring a corrective rebuke, and help bring people back in a loving way to the path they need to be on.  What happens in the family dynamic when this doesn’t happen?  When the church stands by and is too afraid to engage in the emotional needs of the sheep.

These teachers in Crete were detestable in the eyes of Paul.  They were lazy gluttons, corrupt, unbelieving, evil beasts that taught religious myths & unnecessary OT laws to exploit believers and gain power and money.  A little bit and switch.

After writing an essay and a sermon on Christian leadership I’m asked to now apply how this chunk of Paul’s teaching to my life. I’ve prayed about this quite a bit and done a lot of research.  Some questions have come to the surface of my heart.

Is it possible that the problems that existed in Crete 2000 years ago are happening in the church today?
Yes, It seams as though the natural consequences of the Western world view allows for there to be a lack of accountability between leaders and the people that they deeply care for.

Is it possible that there are false teachers operating out of the wrong spirit in Kansas City?
Yes, and I think it’s possible & that The bigger issue in our day and time is the relational power being stripped from the gospel through empty teaching.

Our world is so globalized, we are influenced by teachers as much online as we are the ones down the street. So, having said that is it possible that there are false teachers operating out of the wrong spirit on our Facebook loop?
Yes! I think it’s important for us to look past the delicious sounding words that feel good to our ears and Peel back the layers of entertainment to see what exactly the value system is behind the force that drives their ministry.  I find myself so purposed to find like-minded believers that up until recently I felt isolated.  Incredibly grateful for the women in my life now that see me for who I am and I can count on in times of need. 😘 to my Tribe of 5.
Caylyn, Liz, Lynn,Nancy, and Me

It’s a sobering question to me because I have this internal worldview that says no matter what comes at me, I will be able to see through it because, I hear from God!
Or, I can eat the meat and spit out the bones.  So the question is, is it possible for me to be deceived by one of these false teachers?
Yes, yikes frightening when I think about it.   Even more so, am I influenced by the absence of action, or the neglect of action taken out of fear?  Have some become inactive by way of empty teaching?  Have some grown cold because of sickness and brokenness that weighs down the soul?

I would like to pause for a moment and shine the light on somebody that I really admire that is doing things right.  My campus pastor, Kwan Porter at Life Mission Church gave a very compelling monologue as the opener to our prayer team meeting last night.   This was his scripture of source:

“You must continually bring healing to lepers and to those who are sick,  and make it your habit to break off the demonic presence from people,  and raise the dead back to life. Freely  you have received the power of the kingdom, so freely release it to others.
Matthew 10:8”

I could barely stay in my seat as he proclaimed our authority in Christ, our kingdom responsibility and his passion to see this happen amongst those that walk through the doors of our church.  This type of faith, wow moves people into action.   Thank you leader ship at my church for taking risks big enough to believe that we can do the things that Jesus told us to do.

But, the bigger question is what do we do as leaders when we know that someone’s life, a leaders life doesn’t line up with the beautiful freedom found in the gospel?

God’s word tells us what to do! “rebuke sharply, and silence the many insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers because they were upsetting whole families by teaching things that they shouldn’t teach. “  The issues are a little different, but the outcome is destructive nonetheless.  I think that one of the major problems that plagues the church today is the arm of those that know, and see people that need stopped in their ways, absent.  The arm that gently redirects and stops the pattern is not there.

Titus wasn’t a superhuman elevated leader in the church.  He was an uncircumcised outsider that gave his heart to abiding in this mysterious relationship with Jesus.
He was a friend of Paul that said yes to trip to an island in his region of the world. God placed him in a Jewish body of believers and said pick some leaders to oversee this body as to bring some order to it.  Again, he was an uncircumcised non-Jewish believer!  A couple hundred years prior these Jewish folks were not even supposed to associate with his kind.  God used him to minister to people that believed falsely that you had to eat certain food and set yourself apart through circumcision in order to become a child of God.

Can you imagine how unqualified he felt at this task.  Can you imagine how unqualified Paul felt at reaching the early church that was primarily all Jewish considering he had grown up in a Pharisees house and murdered countless Christians.

“But when the goodness and lovingkindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of work is done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by this grace we might become heirs up to the hope of eternal life. “ Titus 3

Like the church in Crete, I think it’s possible for you and I to be led astray and not see it right away.
Pacified by the eloquence of gifted teachers, almost into a state of frozen in activity.

But when we do come to realize....

Is it OK that we standby if the family of God, brothers and sisters in Christ are being hurt and nothing is done?

Is it OK to not get involved in your neighbors life if you sense a problem or can help meet a need?

We know that teaching is false when the name of God is used but the fruit isn’t there.
What fruit is missing from the lives of those in our churches?

The abiding in his word produces fruit.  His word is alive, the Spirit of God teaches us through this Word and transforms us through times of prayer and service within his kingdom.

God, I ask that you would help my friends and I look for the fruit of those teachers that influence us.
Notice the fruit that isn’t there that could be destroying families in our midst. Help us to discern and test the spirits because you have given us this ability. Help us to silence the destructive voice of those leaders around us that might be operating out of a spirit that isn’t from you God. Help us to show good faith through sound teaching so that in  everything we do we may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior around our necks with celebration!
Help us to recognize any false hoods in ourselves, and take action and seek help when we find them.
Clear our vision and reset our hearts towards connection and relevant influence between each other.  Forgive us God for avoiding hard people and situations, because of our absence the dysfunction goes on.   Your investment in us Father should produce dividends.  I asked for this to begin in new ways in the lives of those in my city.

KCTD15 Tres Dias: The opening up of a sisterhood

"Make a friend
be a friend
lead a friend to Christ"

My experience at Tres Dias
Handmade Palanca~Agape Ideas - Your Fourth Day Connection
KCTD15

Who is this band of women that call forth the lost, the weary and the bold to a 3 day weekend?

What motivates Tres Dias' volunteers to give up a 3 day weekend of their lives & pay like I did to attend?

I am going to suggest an answer.
Fresh revelation from God
& Friendship

Why is Tres Dias different?

1.I stayed for 3 whole days and nights.

Like over night.  Like summer camp but for women that might not realize (that's me) they need recharged like this.  We send off our kids for a week to camp.  Why not do it yourself?  Seriously. It's only 3 days set apart.

2. Everyone else stayed for three days

This is a unique dynamic. A decent sized group of women committed to a process of renewal together. A process of trusting others with time and schedule and giving my heart to seeking the One I love. BTW its mostly a group of women that I did not know.
Woah.
Thats major.
Usually I plan a trip to, say Dallas with women I know and love to see a well known speaker.  Then, we go out to eat and spit 2 hotel rooms and laugh until it's late and do it again the next day. Drive home and done.  Good stuff but,  Tres Dias is so very different than this safe method of retreat.

3. It's 3 whole nights away

The collective heart disposition over a three day weekend is a powerful moving force for breakthrough.  That's what I found, breakthrough in the area of stubbornness.  And God used this corporate gathering of daughters to cleanse what was left of my distrust towards 'women in a family'.
A washing or cleansing of my soul.
um, wow. Chapel time was wonderful. And the reading of the prayers together saturated me in LOVE.
It is tough to be a 1st generation Kingdom minded person!  I was doing just fine honestly, but then God upgraded my damaged thinking towards women.  I am a month out from my Tres Dias weekend KCTD15 and have come to desire the Thursday opening evening experience again! Turns out I might even volunteer in the fall along with beautiful friends that I connected with on weekend.  These women are amazing.  My life has been forever enriched.
They might even turn up to support your daughters volleyball team in prayer and encouragement while out of town playing!  So special.  Thank you Nicole for spending the day with us in Minneapolis!

13 Reasons

I saw 2 of the toughest episodes in the middle of this series this weekend.  According to my teen that is.  This series is unlike anything I have ever watched.  Raw, and really about how we treat each other at its core.

The whole family including my mom and stepdad where in on the experience...the experience I wanted to avoid, but I had to address.  Considering our school district sent out a warning Email.  And I am aware of the need to stay relevant in my teens world.

There were some awkward but relevant moments, also some teachable moments.  Sex, alcohol, drugs, and lack in parent involvement were on display.  Rape as well.  I have to say I can relate to everyone of these high school issues portrayed.  I have talked openly to my girls about my experiences when relevant.
My kids have a father and mother in the home.  I did not have this luxury.  My experiences were much different than theirs as a result.
In the series

We choose to not have Wi-Fi (The hotspots on our 4 cell phones are sufficient for homework) or Netflix, and my kids both managed to get all 13 episodes elsewhere outside the house w/o my knowing with in a week of it being released.  How about that for protecting my girls.

Here's the deal.
Our school districts take the heat of suicide often.
Sometimes the heat is deserved. But a lot of times it might not be.  Glad they warned a lot of us  around the nation via a warning email.  It takes a village to raise healthy children.

I agree that isolated, at risk teens and tweens could be triggered or encouraged by this 'romantic' depiction of suicide and making those naughty teenagers around them pay for their mistakes once someone takes their own life.

But, for my girls it struck a cord.
Amber found herself standing up for a kid at school today that does not fit in well, and in the same 25 minutes another opportunity presented itself for her to stick up for a kiddo that was being bullied. I think that this show helped her see the need for her to participate in the lives of those around her that might need her courage.

Totally Not Realistic btw- 13 cassette tapes to listen to after the tragedy.  Kind of like the plot to a rated R movie like Gone Girl.  Good movie.  A story written for a 30 year old woman to play, not a 16 year old.  This level of drama leads to the "romanticizing" of the topic in my opinion.

Selena says her goal with producing this series was to get us all talking.  The details will all go away, and what will remain hopeful is a conversation started about 'the why behind' teen suicide and how to spot signs in those in our sphere's of influence that might be at risk. In the episodes I watched the school district was being sued for tolerating bullying, my daughter told me later it shows they were not at fault. That's a good lesson for sure. Update I read the last episodes summery and the councilor might be to blame, interesting.  Hers's the link to read up if you like...

http://www.refinery29.com/2017/03/147511/13-reasons-why-recap-episodes-synopsis

When did we as a society stop being accountable to each other and start blame shifting on a grand scale??  In times of pain it's natural to want to find the villain, but it takes 13+ years to bring up a teenager. So many outside of school influences (neglect, divorce, parental drug use, infidelity, porn, abandonment or foster care, verbally abusive parents, narcissistic parents, physically abusive parents, mental illness, poor diet, and more)  lead up to the point of a child entering high school.   Whole communities are falling prey to meth, or how about 'whole communities are falling victim to porn?' Children are part of these broken communities and when they're old enough they have choices to make based on how they were raised AND what's currently taking place in front of them.

When the truth isn't being taught at home, and real neglect is happening on some level (I need to include mental illness-depression) suicide can become a realistic option.  My man summed it up like this " my generation believes in heaven and hell, my kids generation does not."  Parents quit teaching it them, schools banned it and pop culture abandoned the conversation.  I'm talking about it, nice job Selena.  Our society kills millions of babies annually,  gives birth to millions out of wedlock,  divorce is normal and the trickle down effect could be the lack of self Worth a teen might feel in her sphere.   Scratching the surface for sure. Having teens is tougher than I ever knew it could be.   Wish I had time to find a graphic or helpful scripture.

“Some of you cared. None of you cared enough,” says Hannah at the end of her recording. “And neither did I.” Hannah the main character spoke these words before she ends her life.

Identity

I will be a Father to you, and you will be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty.
2 Corinthians 6:18

I am so excited

What's all the hoopla over DNA anyway?
What's in a 1/4 teaspoon of spit I wonder?
Can it unlock the history of who I am?

This is important stuff!
At least It's sealed up nicely
( 'spittle' technically )

I'm a 7th grade para educator.
I have 4 hours a day of science.
I'm getting good at Biology.
DNA is the current topic.
It's fascinating.
If I came
from a line of scholars I would be a Geneticist for sure by now.
Maybe I do come from a line of Scholars and just don't know it yet!

Too much fun dreaming up where my roots are from.
My mom was adopted from Germany.  Her bio Father a soldier from Pennsylvania with 5 kids already.  Where are all my cousins?
My dad's mom was believed to have American Indian ancestry.  Maybe adopted herself.  His dad arrived on a boat from Sweden in the early 1900's...
What stories are waiting for me to discover?

I am so excited
to know more about those that came before me.  American history mixed with European history.  I wonder if finding stories in the Ancestry database will help with the unsettled feelings I have.  Or maybe I have these feeling because this rock is not my home.  Either way I am excited.  They said 6-8 weeks.  Praying it's more like 3 weeks.

I was glad to have this distraction today.
Our Foster kiddo Z was supposed to arrive at our home by 5pm.  At 6:30 I contacted her social worker and found out they messed up on transportation again.  (Just like they did last weekend, Easter.)
I called her and she was devastated.  She has been in treatment for 6 weeks now.  She was placed 3.5 hours away for treatment.  6-7 hours round trip.  We have visited once.

Would you pray for her this week?
She will act out probably due to the huge disappointment 2 weeks in a row, and will be punished for her behaviors.  A visit with with mom is coming soon, one of the last she'll probably have for a long long time.  She suffers after these visits.  Her little sister went home, court says thats ok.  Her older teenage sister in foster care just had a baby and wants nothing to do with her and her teenage brother in care has been moved again.

Adoption looms, she missed an Easter Egg hunt and the movies tonight with Ava and friends.  She is missing out on real relationships and real attachments.  It is really difficult to trust the system.  Believing the best is my policy, and I believe that goes day to day for sure.  But, this feels like Z is just a number.  Just a name on a page that gets forgotten.  Next Thursday I will drive 7 hours round trip to pick her up if they cannot arrange transportation.  They will compensate me for my expenses, but I haven't been compensated for miles in 6 months.  Maybe it will come.

She told me tonight she will never again believe she gets to leave until it is actually happening. I don't blame her.
She mentioned self harm.  Jeesh.  Tough conversations.
But then beacons of hope.  She prayed healing over a 'client' in the facility.  And they both think it worked.  She has done this more than once. Our weekly family therapy is going well.  She is realizing we are committed to her and she is responding.

She feels like her identity is being lost there.

So much negativity swirling around her at all times.  I think she's brilliant and God willing will pull out of this and thrive.
God willing, Dusty and I can point her to the One that will restore her lost sense of Identity.  We cannot fix her, but we can equip her for an intentional life spent walking with a King. She is a princess.  A warrior princess.  This is her true identity.  It is my identity.  It is your identity.

Open your eyes, look towards the Castle.  There's a man sitting on a throne waiting to crown those that we offer the Kingdom up to.

Isaiah 43:6

"I will say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not hold them back.' Bring My sons from afar And My daughters from the ends of the earth"

Who do you think brings the far off daughter to the Father?

Our nation is over flowing with abundance.  The Gospel is to thank.    Weather or not we recognize it, it is true that God calls us to be a blessing.  Think about the implications of that statement. It's more than volunteering at your kids 4th grade halloween party at school, or serving at the food bank monthly.  So much more can be done if we ask God to remove the pillar of fear between us and our God given ability to be blessing.

We are blessed to be a blessing.
Be a blessing, welcome home a child that needs reconciled to their Father. HE is so good and kind, he will guide you though the process.  HE will take away the walls of fear.  Just ask him to.  Ask for a revelation about how to meet the needs of a fatherless child in your community.  I can promise you a deeper gift in return than you could ever imagine.  It's for real. Quite literally He blesses those that take care of the oppressed and orphaned.

If your desperate to feel a touch from God, confused about your direction in life...serve God.  These are my peeps, Ember hope.  I know people that God favors and uses as tools to bring change and training. Let love motivate you to cast out fear and take a step today.

Real Celebration

Easter is a funny Holiday.

I grew up without an understanding of the importance of
Resurrection Sunday and have a difficult time maintaining
traditions at home that are authentic.

Eggs?  Weird.
Crosses and Bunnies?

Weirder. Conflicting world views for sure.
This year was the first year my kids were both too old to attend a local egg hunt.
The one in town ends at 6th grade.  As soon as we returned from the mission field
I took my kids to all of the American traditions I could as to re-acclimate them.
Even the seemingly pagan ones.
They had fun and I felt better as a mom.
(Missionary mom guilt is a real thing.  Pretty selfish I know, but hey, I'm human)

And my 7th grader looks 15, so no sneaking her in.  Our foster kiddo is not with us at
the moment due to treatment needs and so we went to church. The girls served in the
children wing and Dusty and I went to service alone.  It was actually really nice.  I had
brunch after wards as a family to look forward to but no
Real Celebration.
I live for authentic moments with God

It was weird.
I felt odd about it.

Like, abnormally weird about it.
I knew people would be posting their family celebrations and egg hunts. Bright spring dresses and such.  Getting Amber into a dress takes a miracle, and the crucifixion- she will tell you happened 2000 years ago so why dress up today. Nice.  Ava seams to have morphed into Amber's sporty style this year and so there we are.  At church, in jeans and new Nike tanks with messy buns.

I was really enjoying the worship set, because God brought us AN AMAZING worship pastor recently.  I think he came from IHOP (International House of Prayer, not Pancakes)
for sure because he is legit.
Spirit-filled, Ah-mazing.
The room was PACKED.
I'm 100% extrovert.
This means Awesomeness for me.
Corporate worship with 2000 of my closest friends!

At first I had a feeling of total peace, I'm thinking 'God is Good, his Word is true and I am going to be fine not having grandparents (on either side of my family tree alive), or aunts and uncles or cousins near to celebrate the beautiful holiday with...'
I'm independent and I have this amazing husband and these 2 growing daughters to celebrate with.....

Then my thoughts went here? What the world.

Did I mention ever that my mom was adopted from Germany? She has a German mom and American dad.  A married military man takes excursion to Germany where he falls in love with young German woman.  He returns home to Pennsylvania never to see his girlfriend again. Jumps off a lock in a ship yard and dies.
Leaves behind 5 children.
My mom was born shortly after in Europe.

Wow.
I'm destined to feel like a homeless drifter.
How romantic.

Where are the Grunwald's from Pennsylvania at today, I was suddenly thinking?
I miss them.  Its Odd.  My mom already reached out to them years ago and I think they were not interested in meeting us.  I don't blame them.
I know I must have a ton of cousins that might love God like I do and we could celebrate Easter together and be like minded and get each other cross necklaces for Easter instead of eggs....

Or how about the family in Germany that I DO know.
That I met in 7th grade when we moved there for a year, and went to school with that I haven't seen since....

Fragmented bits of my family tree and

GOODNESS

was I feeling the pain of separation, ouch....

Like a truck it hits me

I felt God whisper to my heart that he is allowing me to feel the confusion and loss to heal my heart BUT to also understand WHY it is vital for the Church to take in American orphans through the foster care system.

They grow up, and celebrate holidays w/who?

Fellow inmates, track house friends? Johns?
Approx 25,000 foster kids age out of the system annually.
They will be parents shortly after they leave the system, homeless, unemployed, uneducated, suffering from mental illness.  Very possibly pipelined straight into a trafficking situation they do not know how to walk away from.

AND without family on Easter.  Christmas.  Their birthdays.
Or, maybe like me, trying to create my own new generational normal centered around Christ.
Lest I fall apart completely.

OK, it was like this.  I think God let me into his heart a little bit.  He showed me his heart, how desperate he is to have His kids (the Church) open up their homes to foster kids and let them experience these Glorious holidays!!  Be discipled in His ways and remember how good he has been to us.  Celebrating with orphans.  Kansas foster kids.

Celebrating LIFE w/the least of these.

YES, this is the people in our spheres daily, BUT it is also the foster child.

Our foster kiddo's mom recently lost her rights to her children.  Add to that
a father that has been MIA since her conception  & wallah,
Orphaned. This girl is turning into a young woman in front of us and it is our job
now to tell her she's worthy of the love of a father.  That she is beautiful.  She is wanted.
I found myself telling God that if HE would provide a bigger house than we would take in 2 or 3 girls and Celebrate life with them.

Wow.  It was pretty cool.

Then I after Easter church service I prayed for a young woman living in a track house in KCK.   I asked the Holy Spirit to come and help me touch this woman.  I had a vision of 4 different colored balls of yarn that were mingled together in the middle but were not tangle or knotted. They could be pulled apart easily.  They appeared to be a mess, but actually with true, authentic effort the mess could be handled. I love my church, did I mention that already?  I also love serving on the alter prayer team.  It gives me an opportunity to practice my God given gifting of hear God's voice and ministering to his kids.  So cool.
I can't help but wonder where her parents are.  Is she s product of a broken home?  The foster care system ?

My emotions lately have been intense.  It's like I'm reconnecting with my own story.  I know what I know- in reference to my family tree and trauma, but I don't think I have felt what I should have felt along the way.

"Unhealed trauma shrinks our world so that our main focus becomes suppressing inner chaos"

Most def. My story.

Denial has been my method of healing.  Instead of befriending feelings I pushed them away, the stronger they got the more frozen and panicky I felt.

When I was 11 years old I was forced to leave all that I knew,  My home, my hood, my school and my attachments.  No more father.  No more late night drunken drug parties, or electric bills that would go unpaid.  No more trips on foot with my Dad to the the Church food banks.
Off to meet my mother.  We were strangers. (She was a teen at my birth.  I don't blame her for my childhood.  She's in process just like I am. ) It was a totally different world.  The adjustment is still taking place.  I never adjusted.  I never progressed emotionally past 11.  I got stuck I think.  I went numb.  Survival mode.  I went through the transition from kid to young lady with no real connections or attachments.  With a developing body that was created in the image of God, I did not know my true worth and so I gave it away looking for love.  Am I pretty?  Do I matter?  Do you notice me?   These huge needs that only a father could meet were open ended now and I was desperate for connections.   Painfully insecure.  Running into trouble without seeing its potential for danger.

I paid a great price ignoring my body's messages trying to tell me to feel pain and loss.  I was handicapped and could not detect the harmful and truly dangerous detours in my teen years.

I chuckle thinking that I did not see this Foster Care calling coming on the horizon.  God is so good to me.  He is taking the wounding I had from 11-18 (and then some)...and healing them through loving and caring for foster kids.
I think I can relate! Who knew.  God did. Seriously amazing.  Full circle. Totally healing headed my way.  In the perfect season and time.  His timing and my desperate attempt to get it right.
I thought it was just what God was asking our family to do, be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Living life on Mission.
But it is SO much more.

Ask God to speak you your family about how you can help the foster kids in your community.  How can we the Church be effective and meet the needs of the American orphan?

Father God,  minister to who ever reads these words.  Send you Holy Spirit to call your sons and daughters to house the orphan.  To the families in need of temporary foster care too.   Your plans for the Church are so sweet, I ask that you would ready the ears of the Bride to hear this great need.  To hear your heart beat for the fatherless, the motherless, the fragmented wonders that feel homeless. Those that miss their families and are in foster care.  Equip us Father for this call to love those that are not from our own wombs.  I have been given the robe, the crown and the keys to the Kingdom.  Should I not pass this opportunity along to the least of these?
